Friend 2 Friend Part II

In the very first Rocky movie, the Italian Stallion, Rocky Balboa, very eloquently encourages his demure girlfriend, Adrian. “I got gaps. You got gaps. Together we got no gaps.”

But Rocky got it all wrong. He’s got gaps. Adrian’s got gaps. And no person alive is going to fill those gaps. God is the only One who can fill our gaps. And I’d go so far as to say that He is the One who gave us those gaps so that He can fill them. He is the great I AM who fills our gaps and fills in our blanks.

When we say, “I’m not good enough.”
God says, “I AM.”
When we say, “I’m not smart enough.”
God says, “I AM.”
When we say, “I'm not strong enough.”
God says, “I AM.”
When we say, “I’m not ________ enough.”
God says, “I AM.”
He is the God who fills in our gaps. He is the God who fills in our blanks.

I’ve often heard it said there is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man, that  cannot be filled by another created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.
Paul wrote: “[God] said to me . . . for My strength  and power are made perfect (fulfilled and completed) and show themselves most effective in [your] weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9, AMPC).

Paul knew what he could accomplish on his own: nothing. Oh, he could be busy. We all can do that. But bearing “fruit that will remain” is another story. This is how he viewed his own personal weaknesses:
I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan’s angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn’t think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me, “My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.”

Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become (2 Cor. 12:7–10, MSG).
Paul had great confidence. The prefix “con” means “with,” and the root “fid” means “faith.” So a confident person is one who walks in faith. When you allow God to fill in your gaps with His power and provision, you will have the confidence and courage to leave the limpid land of in-between and march into the Promised Land of life to the full!

That’s where I want to go today. Where I want to live. How about you? If you’re ready to stop wandering around in the wilderness of indecision and start moving forward to take hold of your Promised Land of life to the full, say to yourself “I’m taking hold!”
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Friend 2 Friend

I have discovered some wonderful advantages to growing older. Honestly, I can get away with so much more than I could when I was younger – and I have to say that I love it!

Like many of you, I have paid some heavy life dues. I am enjoying a refreshing freedom in what I say and do - as long as I say and do it in love and with integrity before God.

I am flat-out amazed by the fact that people value my advice. They actually think I know what I am doing. Hilarious! I know!

But I am thrilled to share the lessons and God-truths I have learned along the way, and I am also free to occasionally respond with a hearty “I don’t have a clue what you should do.” No guilt. No shame. Just being real.

Yes, I have aches and pains that I really could do without, but that is why God made drugs and doctors to dispense those drugs. God has gifted doctors and counselors because He knew we would need them. We live in broken bodies and dwell in a broken world. We must deal with the consequences of our frail humanity until Jesus comes back and takes us to heaven where He gives us our perfect, pain-free bodies for all eternity. Yes! I cannot wait, but until that day, I know He wants my feet to hit the floor each morning, ready to face and delight in whatever He has for me to do.

One of my current personal life goals is to royally tick off Satan whenever I can. Some days, his feeble tactics make me laugh and I respond with, “Seriously, that’s is? That’s all you’ve got?” Other days, I am on my face before God asking for strength to withstand the demonic attacks of hell itself. Either way, I win. I have read the whole Book … and we win! No matter how bad it gets here and now, we win for all of eternity.

I can say with authority that you probably will live through that crisis you are convinced will be the death of you. What defines you today may very well seem ridiculous in ten years or even ten days.
Foolishness will hopefully give way to wisdom gained the hard way. I now give myself permission to do or not do things I once would have felt compelled to do simply because it was someone’s expectation … and not God’s plan.

My audience for this race of life has certainly changed over the years. I no longer give credence to those people who delight in leering at me through the fish bowl, waiting and watching for me to fall and fail so they can feel better about their own faults and failures.

Those people are not my audience. My audience is God Himself – and He is crazy about me, cheering me on every step of the way. You see, angels dance simply because I exist. I am God’s creation – and so are you.

Yes, there are moments when I desperately want to turn back the clock. But then, I come to my senses and realize that there are many years of my life that I really do not want to revisit, and there is so much of my life now that I love. My life is certainly not perfect. But girlfriend, perfection is for heaven – not earth.

We have choices to make with every passing season of life.

We can hang on to past accomplishments, using them as an excuse to sit and sour, or we can seek God, asking and expecting Him to use us up in His Kingdom work.

We can rise each day to dance with joy simply because we know Him and He knows us, or we can focus on what is wrong in our lives and be miserable.

We can sing at the top of our lungs that God is more than enough for whatever comes our way, or we can sing the blues.

We can choose to give Him praise – even when it seems like there is nothing for which to praise Him, or we can sit down and let fear trample us in the dust of Satan’s hissings.

We can grow old in body, mind and spirit, or we can serve Him with passion and purpose until we take our last breath.

Five best movies for girls night in

What is a girls night in without and abundance of sweet, funny and sometimes heart wrenching chick flicks?

While you and your girls are painting each other’s toe-nails and drooling over Zac Efron, you can watch any of these fabulous chick flicks that will most definitely keep you entertained. And best of all? No boys to ruin the fun!

These are our top 5 picks of classic chick flicks:

1. Mean Girls

Even if you have seen this film a thousand times, it never gets old. The terrous reign of Regina George as a high school Queen B and the craziness that follows is hilarious. Plus, it has a positive message – what’s not to love?

2. Legally Blonde

Another chick flick comedy classic. Reese Witherspoon stars as a ditzy blonde who goes to law school to win back her ex, but ends up winning at life. Such a great movie with tons of funny moments and a great ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ message. Bend and snap, ladies!

3. The Notebook

If you’re going to watch The Notebook, make sure you have at least a box of tissues for each of your girlfriends. This beautiful story about the power of love will not leave a dry eye. Oh, and did we mention it stars Ryan Gosling…

4. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

The first and most classic chick flick, Breakfast at Tiffany’s has had a major influence on pop culture today and of course fashion. The impeccable Audrey Hepburn is the heroine in this 1961 classic. And the fashion is to die for!

5. Bridesmaids

The surprise hit of recent chick flick comedies, Bridesmaids is not only ridiculously funny, but a great film to watch with your girls. Kristen Wigg and Melissa McCarthy make this film into one of the funniest comedies of recent years. You’ll laugh until your stomach hurts, guaranteed!
